ECIMAT has highly specialized staff and suitable equipment for histological processing of tissues, lyophilization, seawater analysis, sediments, biological material and ecotoxicology bioassays.
The histological processing service comprises all the chain from samples dissection to their fixation, paraffin impregnation, cutting and dying. The user can request the whole processing or just part of it.
Samples analysis involve analytic measurements of water, sediment and biological material. In sample waters, we analyse physical and chemical parameters (pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved CO2, phosphates, ammonium, suspended matter, dissolved metals etc.) and biological parameters (biological oxygen demand, coliform presence, etc.). In sediment samples, we determinate total organic carbon, organic matter by calcination, aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons, etc. Finally, in biological material, we test the presence of E.coli and/or other coliforms, PAHs and other compounds analysis in marine organisms. More information about samples analysis.
ECIMAT staff has large experience in undertaking ecotoxicology bioassays. There are several types of bioassays and model organisms, however, the commonest ones use microalgae growth (Isochrysis galbana), sea-urchin embryos (Parecentrotus lividus), or bivalve embryos (Mytilus galloprovincialis), survival bioassays of copepods (Acartia clause and Tisbe batagglia) or amphipods (Corophium), and bioluminescence inhibition tests (Vibrio fischeri) using Microtox.
