CIM and Campus do Mar present their contributions to the economy of the sea at Business2Sea

Presentation of Sherpa do Mar Monday 16th in the workshop 'Towards a pact for skills in the maritime technology industry'

Business2Sea is an international event focused on the development of projects and businesses in the different sectors of the economy of the sea. Promoted by the Portuguese association Fórum Océano and the Centro Tecnolóxico do Mar (CETMAR), this event was going to be held for the first time in Vigo but the health situation derived from the covid-19 forced to opt for a virtual format. The symposium, with about 600 participants, started  Monday November 16th, coinciding with the National Day of the Sea in Portugal, and will run until 19th. Throughout these five days University of Vigo, through the CIM and the Campus do Mar, will present several of its projects related to the marine economy such as Sherpa do Mar, the European Blue Biobank, MarRisk or Algalup.

Sherpa do Mar, on the first day

This Monday’s opening day included a workshop that, under the title “Towards a pact for skills in the maritime technology industry”, focused on the blue economy and the needs of sectors such as shipbuilding, maritime transport and renewable energy. Among the initiatives presented was the Sherpa do Mar project, promoted by the REDE group, the Campus do Mar and the R&D Office leading a consortium in which the universities of Porto, Coruña and Santiago participate, together with Ciimar, Uptec, Zona Franca de Vigo, Fundação Fórum Oceano and Gain. The general objective of Sherpa do Mar is to launch a new cross-border network between Galicia and the north of Portugal to boost the creation and consolidation of new knowledge-intensive business activities in the marine-maritime field. In the presentation, led by the researcher Andrea Ogando, from the Rede group, the relevance of cross-border cooperation in identifying needs in entrepreneurship in the marine-maritime field and synergies in the ecosystem to support entrepreneurship were analyzed.

In addition, the UVigo researcher Kais Jacob Mohamed Falcon also participated in the Monday session in a parallel session on the priorities for a successful training strategy in maritime industrial ecosystems, such as renewable energy offshore, shipbuilding or the Marine transport.

The next appointment with the UVigo in this forum will be tomorrow, Wednesday, when Professor Luis Domínguez will participate in a workshop on the relevance of the marine dimension in the cross-border programming instruments of the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion.

On Thursday, three CIM projects

On Thursday, the UVigo Marine Research Centre will have a prominent presence within the framework of Business2 Sea, with three workshops focused on as many projects coordinated or in which the CIM participates.

Precisely as coordinator of the EBB project, the CIM organizes the workshop Do not be a biopirate: the European Blue Biobank can help you use marine genetic resources legally, which will be held from 9.30 am. The main objective of this workshop is to inform and raise awareness about the existing duties in the access and use of genetic resources, derived from the Nagoya Protocol (2010) and associated regulations, presenting a series of cases based on the experience acquired by the EBB project , directed by Jesús Souza Troncoso (Ecocost, CIM). During the workshop, one of the results of the project, a step-by-step guide for users of marine genetic resources, will be presented by Fiz de la Costa (CIM) and the lessons learned will be discussed in a round table moderated by Belén Martín (CIM).

During the second workshop on Thursday, starting at 12.30 pm, the results of the MarRISK project, will be presented, by representatives of different partner entities, such as Cetmar, IIM-CSIC and the universities of Vigo, Aveiro and Minho. Co-financed by the Poctep program and coordinated at UVigo by Ramón Gómez Gesteira (Ephyslab, CIM), its objective was to assess the most relevant coastal risks associated with climate change. The results presented in this workshop will help to improve the adaptation and response capacity of the coastal communities of the Euroregion to face and mitigate these risks and their consequences. Among other studies, Carlos Rodríguez, from the REDE group, will present an analysis on the increase in resilience in ports, focusing on A Coruña.

Starting at 4.30 pm, the last afternoon workshop, in which the University of Vigo participates will begin. Some of the results of the Algalup project-Integral alternative for the exploitation of macroalgae in Galicia and Portugal will be presented, coordinated by Anfaco – Cecopesca and in which the CIM and six other entities participate (University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, CTAQUA, Universidade da Coruña and Universidad de Açores, Bantry Marine Research Station Ltd, AquaTT-Intrigo). Under the title Knowledge transfer opportunities on macroalgae exploitation, the consortium of this project proposes a workshop aimed at deepening the understanding of some recent research results of the project and establishing links that favor the capture of results from previous and future research. A panel of experts will discuss how to make the most of macroalgae exploitation. The worskshop will be moderated by Jesús S. Troncoso, a CIM researcher and professor at the University of Vigo.
