Tuesday May 7th, Dr Alejandro Cabrera Crespo, a Senior Researcher of the EPHYSLAB group of the CIM-UVigo, will present at the “Café con Sal” Conference Cycle the lecture “Interaction between waves and coastal structures: from coastal protection to energy generation“, in which he will present his work on numerical modelling applied to coastal protection and to design wave energy converters.
Numerical modelling has become a very powerful tool in the field of engineering and science to solve complex problems. The main advantage is the ability to simulate any scenario without the need to build expensive physical models since the numerical models do not suffer from scale effects. In addition, numerical simulation can provide physical data that can be difficult or even impossible to measure in a real model. Moreover, numerical modelling means that the number of physical tests can be reduced, which implies significant savings in money and time.
The EPHYSLAB group is the main developer of the open-source code named DualSPHysics (http://dual.sphysics.org/), product of a collaborative effort amongst researchers of different institutions of United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy and Belgium. DualSPHysics is based on the SPH methodology, which is one of the most exciting new areas in the field of computational fluid and solid dynamics and has been a major research activity in the EPHYSLAB group for over 15 years. This new numerical method is opening up the possibility of research into fields that were well beyond any modelling capability but are now being actively pursued.
During the conference, Alejandro will present their activities within the DualSPHysics project with focus on coastal engineering applications such as the design of protection structures and the design of wave energy devices.
The conference will take place at the conference room of the ECIMAT at 11:00h (CES) and will be live streamed on http://tv.uvigo.es/es/directo/1.html and permanently available on CIM and UVigoTV websites.
