Tuesday, 1st December at 11h, Carlos Canchaya,
professor at the University of Vigo and researcher in the Comparative Genomics Group of the CIM, will present the conference Genomics of Mytilus galloprovincialis and its microbiota within the “Café con Sal” program.
The mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) is a highly resistant organism to different biotic and abiotic stresses, which suggests that it possesses an effective innate immunity that makes it less susceptible to pathologies or massive deaths, compared to other bivalves. These characteristics, in addition to its social and economic importance in Galicia, make the mussel a model organism of great interest for research.
In 2011, thanks to the joint effort of two research groups from the University of Vigo, among which is the researcher Carlos Canchaya, and the Marine Research Institute CSIC; the nuclear genome of mussels began to be sequenced, obtaining, 6 years later, the first draft of the genome of two female mussels. The studies of mussel populations from Italy and Spain subsequently made it possible to know the mussel pangenoma.
During the conference, the speaker will present the methodology and results of this study, which revealed the high complexity and high number of genes of the mussel. Likewise, Carlos Canchaya will discuss the relationship between high variability at the population level and high immune resistance against pathologies or other stress factors. Finally, the speaker will present some of the studies carried out at present on the genetic study of the mussel microbiota, which contributes to his interest as a model organism and is a case study of the adaptation of organisms to their host.
The conference will be held virtually, being live streaming through the Remote Campus of the University of Vigo. To Access please follow the instructions bellow:
