Tuesday June 4th, Náyade Álvarez, a predoctoral Researcher at the Animal Ecology Group (CIM-UVigo), will present the lecture “Costs of learning in juvenile three spined stickleback” at the “Café con Sal” conference cycle.
The Behavioral Ecology Lab is a research lab integrated in the Animal Ecology Group, a cooperative assembly of research groups within the University of Vigo. They work fundamentally in trying to understand how natural selection shapes the life-history and behaviour of wild animal populations. Their work focuses mainly on seabirds and fish. Among the fish, this laboratory focuses on the sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a species used as a model organism worldwide, mainly due to the knowledge of its complete genome and the easiness of its maintenance.
Náyade Álvarez, directed by Alberto Velando and Sin-Yeon Kim, is developing her doctoral thesis with the aim to know the responses of the sticklebacks at the level of behaviour and life strategy (including growth rates, maturation, reproduction rate and life expectancy) against changes in environmental conditions, as well as the factors that determine those responses.
During her conference, Náyade will present a study in which she evaluated experimentally if learning presents costs, and if it influences the cognitive ability and life history traits in terms of growth, reproduction and survival. She also explored the effect on the brain.
The conference will take place at the conference room of the ECIMAT at 11:00h (CES) with a coffee, and will be live streamed on http://tv.uvigo.es/es/directo/1.html and permanently available on CIM and UVigoTV websites.
