Unraveling cancer evolution using cockles

Thursday 3rd May, Alicia L. Bruzos, a PhD student at the Mobile Genomes Lab, University of Santiago de Compostela, was invited as speaker in the Café con Sal conference cycle. Under the title “Unraveling cancer evolution through transmissible cancers”, she presented the latest findings of her work, focused on identifying the genetic causes of cancer transmissibility. Using cockles transmissible cancers as a model, Alicia work unravels the evolution of cancer cells and how they adapt to their environment, either in the host itself or in the external environment. This research opens the door to inform alternative and therapeutic strategies in both animals and humans.

Alicia’s work is part of a study lead by Jose Tubio and funded by a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. Alicia’s PhD is financed through the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO) with a predoctoral contract.
