On Monday February 22nd will take place the presentation of the project “ENCORAT: Actions to reduce accidental mortality of the shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) in gill fishing gear in the North Atlantic Demarcation”, led by the Animal Ecology Group (GEA) of the Marine Research Centre of the University of Vigo (CIM) in collaboration with the University of Oviedo and funded by the Biodiversity Foundation.

The shag is an endangered seabird that in recent years has suffered a significant regression throughout Spain due to overfishing of its prey species, oil pollution and accidental mortality in gill fishing gear. The ENCORAT project, led by the Animal Ecology Group (GEA, CIM) with the collaboration of the University of Oviedo, aims to reduce the mortality of the shag in Galician and Asturian waters, by installing LED-type luminous devices in networks and the study of the feeding areas of the individuals and their overlap with the fishing areas. More information about the ENCORAT project.

The event, aimed at the professional sector related to the exploitation and management of fishing resources, groups and people involved in the conservation of nature, or any person interested in the matter, will consist of two lectures:

  • 12:00 h -Seabirds and fishing gear: the case of the shag – David Álvarez, Assistant Professor at the University of Oviedo
  • 12:45 hThe ENCORAT Project: objectives and actions to be developed – Álvaro Barros, researcher for the Animal Ecology Group and technician hired for the project.
