The good performance of centers of excellence like CIM places the University of Vigo among the best in the world

According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, it stands out in five fields: Petroleum Engineering, Agriculture and Forestry, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subjetc places the University of Vigo among the best in the world in five fields: Petroleum Engineering, Agriculture and Forestry, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry. As the rector, Manuel Reigosa, announced in the Governing Council last week, since 2021, when the University of Vigo started to be evaluated by this ranking, it has moved from being among the best in the world in two fields in 2023 to three and in this new edition to five, which according to Reigosa “is a significant improvement”, especially with a focus on the international recruitment of students.

The classification, published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provides an independent comparative analysis of over 16,400 university programs, taken by students from more than 1,500 universities in 96 countries worldwide, including 55 academic disciplines and five broad areas of knowledge. The good performance of the centers of excellence of the Galician Government is closely related to this new impetus of the University of Vigo in the ranking. Thus, as explained by the Vice-Rector for Research, Transfer, and Innovation, Belén Rubio, the results achieved, for example, in Electrical Engineering, highlight the work of Cintecx, which “is presented as a relevant center, which we hope will soon also achieve the cataloging as a CIGUS center in the call for centers by the Galician Government in 2023, which is about to be resolved”. As for Biology, “it fits into both lines of CINBIO (together with Chemistry) and that of CIM, and therefore continues to reflect the role of our centers of excellence considered as CIGUS centers by the Galician Government”.

Other highlighted subjects

In total, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 evaluated the University of Vigo in 31 subjects, and in addition to these five in which it achieved a prominent position, there are some others in which very good scores were obtained, even better than those that entered the ranking. This is the case, for example, of Earth and Marine Sciences and Environmental Sciences, “a result of the good performance of CIM”, but since it is a more extensive area, the good scores were not enough to be among the best, as “it must be taken into consideration that there are more than 3,000 institutions and the competition is very high”.
