The aim is to align the research activity of the University of Vigo with the demands of the fishing sector.
The Marine Research Centre (CIM) and the Inter-University Research Centre ECOBAS (Economics and Business Administration for Society), of the University of Vigo, together with FUNDAMAR, presented the final results of the PASOS project (Action Plan for the Promotion of Responsible Research and Innovation – RRI – in the Marine Sphere through Social Economy Entities).
The event took place on the morning of Tuesday 27th September in the Redeiras Building on the University of Vigo campus. After the institutional opening by Marta Mª Fernández Tapias, regional delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Javier Touza, president of FUNDAMAR, and Maribel Doval, Vice-chancellor of Welfare, Equity and Diversity of the University of Vigo, it was the turn of the presentation of the Action Plan for the Promotion of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in the marine field. This was done by the main researcher of the PASOS project, Mª Mercedes Mareque, and by the manager and responsible of the PASOS project in FUNDAMAR, María Caldero.
The objective of the Action Plan is to align the research activity of the University of Vigo to the great challenges needs of the social economy of the sea sector that have been identified in the project. To do so, the principles of the RRI have been used as guiding principles to address those challenges. Structured in three strategic axes (social, economic and environmental), each one of them proposes 3 strategic lines of action and within each one of them actions are proposed that should be followed, indicating their level of prioritisation.
The initiative aims to “reduce the gap that exists between the scientific community and society, encouraging entities in the marine sector to work together throughout the research and innovation process”.
The day concluded with a round table discussion, moderated by ICSEM, with representatives from marine-related organisations, research centres and administrations.
The PASOS project aims to contribute to the promotion of the social economy as a strategy to face the challenges of the marine sector, through RRI. It is funded by the EUSUMO Network and developed by FUNDAMAR and the research centres of the University of Vigo, CIM (Marine Research Centre) and ECOBAS.
