October 19th at 11:00 h, Monserrat López, research technician of the pathology laboratory at the Instituto de Investigación y Formación Agraria y Pesquera (IFAPA – Centro Agua del Pino), will present, in a new session of the cycle of conferences “Café con Sal”, the most outstanding results of her Ph.D dissertation with the talk “Molecular characterization and pathologies of oysters from the Andalusian Atlantic coast”.
Due to the reopening in 2011 of the commercial exploitation of the ostreids natural beds in Huelva’s coast, after 24 years without activity, it was necessary to know the presence and distribution of the different species of oysters, and have an initial cataloging of the health status of natural oyster beds, since the variant of the OsHV-1 μVar virus spread throughout Europe and there was an obvious import and movement of oyster seed in Andalucia.
In this context, Monserrat López, directed by José Ignacio Navas Triano, an expert pathologist for bivalve mollusc diseases at IFAPA, and Dr. Roberto de la Herran, Department of Genetics at the University of Granada, developed his doctoral thesis with the main objective of evaluating and characterizing the oyster populations of the Atlantic coast of Andalucia and study their pathologies using histological and molecular techniques. Funded by IFAPA, the research group AGR-247 (IFAPA – Centro de Agua del Pino, Huelva) and the HERPEMOL (funded by JACUMAR-MAGRAMA) and BONAQUA (FEDER) projects, Monserrat also studied the prevalence and distribution of the protozoan Marteilia refringens, and the prevalence, distribution and genetic variability of Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) in the Andalusian natural beds.
During the conference, the speaker will present the most important results obtained in her thesis and the work she is currently doing to complete those studies.
