Due to its key importance in "ecosystem functioning", biological diversity plays a fundamental role in the ecosystem´s capacity to provide services (as a source of food, water, climate regulation, and other) it is fundamental in the storage and on the flow of materials and energy in nature through the roles of primary producers, consumers and decomposers.
