Singular oceanographic infrastructures at ECIMAT: mesocosms and HF Radar

Tuesday February 18th, Dr Jose González, responsible of the Oceanography service of the ECIMAT (CIM-UVigo), will present the lecture Singular oceanographic infrastructures at ECIMAT: mesocosms and HF Radar at the “Café con Sal” conference cycle.

Singular Infrastructures can be defined as large facilities or equipment dedicated to state-of-the-art research, open to national and international scientific community, with a very high investment and/or maintenance costs. Two examples of this kind of infrastructures can be found at ECIMAT: HF Radar and mesocosms facilities. HF Radars are a marine technology that provides near real-time sea surface current maps in areas from a few kilometers up to 200km. These systems are scarce due to their cost and installation needs, but in the case of the system installed at ECIMAT there is another singularity: its frequency, and thus, its resolution. At the present only two systems have a resolution of 175m and one of them is the one located at ECIMAT. Mesocosms facilities at ECIMAT are also singular as they are the only marine mesocosms in the Iberian Peninsula and the only ones located at an upwelling region in Europe.

During the conference, Jose González, as responsible of these infraestructures at the ECIMAT, will present both infrastructures, related current projects and its implication in European networks.

The conference will take place at the conference room of the ECIMAT at 11:00h with a coffee and will be live streamed on http://tv.uvigo.es/es/directo/1.html and permanently available on CIM and UVigoTV websites.
