Presentation

The Marine Research Center (CIM) of the University of Vigo is a European benchmark in interdisciplinary marine research, recognized for its scientific excellence, innovative capacity, and social impact. Through a strong international network and unique infrastructures, the Center promotes marine biotechnology, ocean observation, sustainable aquaculture, and blue energy, consolidating Galicia as a leading region in marine science and contributing to addressing major environmental and social challenges through innovative and collaborative approaches.

The center is made up of 194 people, of whom 144 are researchers organized into 16 groups carrying out cutting-edge marine science, and 50 are technical support staff for research. Recognized by the Xunta de Galicia as a Galician Research Center (CIGUS Network) and the central node of the marine strategy of the Galician University System (SUG), the CIM leads excellent marine science with real impact.

CIM is deeply connected to the sea and to the Galician territory. From this connection, it promotes research, innovation, and collaboration to protect the ocean and contribute to the well-being and sustainability of the communities that depend on it.

Our mission

We contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans through science, innovation and knowledge transfer. We conduct research to better understand the sea and put that knowledge at the service of society, the planet and future generations.

Our vision

We aim to be an internationally recognized reference center in marine research and a key agent in blue innovation, knowledge transfer, and outreach within the European Atlantic Arc.

Structure

CIM has three governing bodies established in its internal regulations: the Governing Board, the Executive Committee, and the Scientific Committee. The Center is organized into three main units: the Strategic Unit, the Technical Support Unit, and the Research Unit. In addition, the Executive Committee is supported by internal advisory bodies, such as the Center Council and the Equality and Sustainability Committee, as well as by external advisory bodies, including the CAE.
