Campus Auga will fund five agro-food-related projects developed by outstanding research staff from the University of Vigo through the Inou+ Posdou Campus Auga 2026 grant call. The initiatives focus on topics such as the valorisation of bagasse, potato peel, macroalgae and traditional Galician maize varieties; the sustainable control of downy mildew; and the impact of climate change on agriculture in South America.

The projects are beneficiaries of the Vice-Rectorate of the Ourense campus call for grants for research staff in the postdoctoral training stage of the Campus of Ourense–Campus Auga (Inou+ Posdou Campus Auga 2026). The initiative is funded within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Regional Ministry of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training and the University of Vigo for the development of strategic actions in Campus Auga (2024–2027). Its purpose is to contribute to strengthening the research lines of the specialization project of the Ourense campus accredited by the Xunta de Galicia, Campus Auga. Likewise, the call aims to serve as a talent retention pathway, so that early-career research staff with relevant and innovative scientific and technical contributions have the possibility to lead projects. The 2026 grants have been awarded to five projects, with a total allocation of €50,000.

Among the funded projects is that of the researcher from the Marine Research Centre of the University of Vigo (CIM), Albenis Pérez, who will carry out a project on future changes in atmospheric transport of moisture and heat and their impact on hydroclimatic conditions in rainfed agricultural regions in South America. The researcher notes that “rainfed agriculture, a pillar of global food security, is extremely vulnerable to climate variability due to its dependence on precipitation and especially the occurrence of compound drought and heat events.” Thus, his work aims to assess hydroclimatic and phenological risk for rainfed agriculture in South America, resulting from projected changes in atmospheric transport of moisture and heat.

The CIM holds the CIGUS recognition from the Xunta de Galicia, which certifies the quality and impact of its research, and its activity is co-financed by the European Union through the ERDF 21–27 Programme.
