They will take part in the programme of activities organized throughout the month of February by the Universidade de Vigo, delivering talks and workshops to nearly a thousand people in 20 schools and one day-care centre, as well as participating in the eXXperimenta en Feminino fair.
With the aim of highlighting the role of women scientists and encouraging STEM vocations among girls, the Universidade de Vigo is commemorating 11F—the International Day of Women and Girls in Science—throughout the entire month of February with an extensive programme of activities across its campuses in Vigo, Pontevedra, and Ourense. Alongside the ElasFanCienTec workshops in Vigo and the eXXperimenta en Feminino fair in Ourense, UVigo will promote workshops, fairs, talks, screenings, competitions, and meetings with the educational community and the public. The aim is to make women’s work in science and technology more visible, create female role models, and break down the stereotypes that influence the choice of studies.
The extensive programme of activities is driven by lecturers and researchers themselves, as well as by the research centres, schools, and faculties across the three campuses, with the support of the Equality Unit and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit, in collaboration with the Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología – Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
Twenty-two researchers from the Centro de Investigación Mariña of the Universidade de Vigo will take part in this programme of activities, delivering talks and workshops to more than a thousand people in nearly 20 primary and secondary schools, as well as in a day-care centre for older adults.
In addition, on February 11 at 12:00 p.m., the Marine Research Center (CIM) will hold the award ceremony for the fourth edition of the Marie Tharp contest, aimed at its predoctoral and postdoctoral female researchers. The event will include a roundtable moderated by Faro de Vigo journalist Sandra Penelas on the challenges and opportunities for women in marine science, as well as the screening of the winning audiovisual pieces.
eXXperimenta in Feminine, on the 20th in Ourense
Meanwhile, the large outreach fair eXXperimenta in Feminine will take place on February 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Polytechnic building on the Ourense campus, featuring the participation of researchers from CIM’s EPhysLab group. Open to non-university students from the province in the morning and to the general public in the afternoon, the event will offer multiple experimental stations on chemistry, biotechnology, programming, aeronautics, and health, aiming to bring STEM disciplines closer to society. In addition, science communicator Deborah García Bello will give a talk titled Barbies and Robots, open to the public until capacity is reached.
CIM holds the CIGUS recognition from the Regional Government of Galicia, which certifies the quality and impact of its research, and its activities are co-financed by the European Union through the FEDER 21-27 Program.
