The Equality and Sustainability Committee of the Marine Research Center (CIM) at the University of Vigo launches the fourth edition of the Marie Tharp contest, aimed at female researchers affiliated with the Center. The competition includes two categories: predoctoral and junior postdoctoral, with a prize of €1,500 for each category.
Aimed at highlighting the role of women in marine science, the award is held in honor of oceanographic cartographer and marine geologist Marie Tharp, co-author of the first world map of the seafloor. Her mapping of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and other unique underwater physiographic features contributed significantly to the demonstration of plate tectonics and continental drift.
Interested female researchers must record a video of up to one minute, briefly and clearly explaining their work, including the purpose, objectives, work plan, results, and impact of their research. The video must be submitted by January 22, 2026, to cim@uvigo.gal.
