The prestigious Stanford University ranking, “Ranking of the World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientists”, reinforces the unstoppable progress of the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo (CIM) in global science. With 13 researchers among the most cited at UVigo, this distinction underlines the excellence and global impact of the CIM in the marine field, consolidating its role as a cutting-edge scientific reference.
The 2025 edition of the Ranking of the World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientist recognizes the increasing research capacity of the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo (CIM). Specifically, of the 48 researchers from the University of Vigo who appear in the ranking taking into account the number of citations throughout their career, 10 of them, that is, 20%, belong to the CIM.
Among the top five positions of the UVigo in the classification that covers the entire professional career is the professor and researcher of the CIM Armando Caballero, of the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Immunology, in position 50,564 in the world and 6254 citations, who is also in position 22 in the world within his field of work and in second at the national level. The ranking is completed by Jorge Domínguez, Emilio Marañón, Ricardo Beiras, Carlos Bendicho, Francisco Javier Pena-Pereira, José Luis Soengas, Carlos García de Leániz, Isela Lavilla and Alejandro Crespo.
The Stanford University database analyzes the most influential researchers in the world, that is, those who are among the 2% most cited within the Scopus database. The ranking establishes two classifications, one in which citations are evaluated throughout the scientific career and another that focuses on the last year, in this case 2024. Each of the tables provides standardized information on article citations, H-index, HM-index adjusted for co-authorship, citations of articles in different authorship positions and a composite indicator, among other aspects, providing metrics with and without self-citations. In addition, scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. Field- and subfield-specific percentiles are also provided for all scientists with at least five articles.
If we take into account the citations generated throughout 2024, the CIM increases its presence on the list with 13 researchers out of the 58 from the University of Vigo that appear on it, almost 24%. They are Ricardo Beiras, Carlos Bendicho, Armando Caballero, Alejandro Crespo, Jorge Domínguez, Moncho Gómez-Gesteira, Emilio Marañón, Elena Ojea, Francisco Javier Pena-Pereira, José Luis Soengas, Carlos García de Leániz, J.M. Domínguez and Maite de Castro.
These data ratify the CIM’s position as a leader in research excellence, recognizing its quality research that reaches the highest international standards, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the marine field at a global level.
The CIM holds the CIGUS certification from the Regional Government of Galicia, which attests to the quality and impact of its research, and its activities are co-financed by the European Union through the 2021–2027 FEDER Program.
