Large fires, floods, heat waves, droughts… meteorological events and extreme risks caused by climate change are increasingly worrying and impacting different areas of society, from governments to citizens. Among them is the legal field. With the aim of delving deeper into this topic, the Faculty of Law on the Ourense campus hosted this Thursday the International Meeting on Law and Extreme Meteorological Risks Generated by Climate Change.
The meeting is the result of the state project Exmerisk: Risk of extreme meteorological and hydrological events in Spain: impacts, future scenarios and tools to improve resilience and adaptation to climate change. This is a coordinated Ecological Transition project funded by the Ministry of Universities and Feder, led by Sergio Vicente Serrano from the Pirenaic Institute of Ecology, CSIC and in which professors Raquel Olalla Nieto and Luis Gimeno, from the Center for Marine Research of the University of Vigo, participate from the University of Vigo.
The initiative was organized by the University of Vigo by the Research Groups Group on Administrative Law and Philosophy of Law (AGAF). It had the support of Campus Auga, the specialization project of the Ourense campus accredited and financed by the Xunta de Galicia, and was directed by UVigo professors Pablo Raúl Bonorino and Raquel Olalla Nieto, from the CIM.
Impact on terrestrial agroforestry systems
The international meeting held in Ourense, which was also attended by students from the Faculty of Law, was structured in two days, one held in the morning and focused on the aforementioned sub-project in the legal field and another in the afternoon focused on the scientific project. The first day was entitled Law and extreme hydrological events generated by climate change and was directed by Pablo Raúl Bonorino.
The second day, organized by the Faculty of Sciences also on the Ourense campus by the EPhysLab (Environmental Physics Laboratory) group of the CIM and directed by Raquel Olalla Nieto and Luis Gimeno, took place in the afternoon under the title Impact of climate extremes on agroforestry terrestrial systems. In it, Ana Maria Durán (University of Costa Rica) spoke about climate justice beyond the resolution of the models and Ana Russo (Higher Institute of Agronomy, University of Lisbon) on compound climate extremes and agricultural risk in the Iberian Peninsula. For her part, Celia Gouveia (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere, University of Lisbon) gave a conference on droughts, heat waves and fires, specifically on their compound and cascading hazards and their repercussions on vegetation, and Fernando Domínguez (Pirenaico Institute of Ecology, CSIC) spoke on When documents speak: climate extremes from the 16th century to the age of AI.
The CIM holds the CIGUS certification from the Regional Government of Galicia, which attests to the quality and impact of its research, and its activities are co-financed by the European Union through the 2021–2027 FEDER Program.
