The CIM awards Enric Gisbert, world reference in aquaculture

In recognition of their contributions to fish nutrition and the development of a more sustainable, innovative and industry-connected aquaculture

The award will be presented at the III CIMentos Annual Assembly, which will be held on October 23 in Vigo

The distinction recognizes the trajectory of an international benchmark in aquaculture research, whose dedication to innovation and collaboration between science and industry represents an inspiring model for current and future generations of researchers. The award ceremony will take place within the framework of the III annual CIMentos Assembly, which will be held in Vigo on October 23, 2025.

A career dedicated to innovation in aquaculture

Doctor from the University of Barcelona (1999), Enric Gisbert, after an international postdoctoral journey at the University of California (Davis) and IFREMER in Brest, joined IRTA in 2004 thanks to a Ramón y Cajal contract, where he leads a research group focused on fish nutrition and its impact on the health and condition of the animal, as well as on the development of functional diets in close collaboration with the aquaculture sector. His line of work also focuses on understanding how the conditions of cultivation and feeding of larvae influence the development of the organism and, in particular, of its digestive and skeletal systems, with the aim of improving the quality of larvae in aquaculture and promoting the sustainability and efficiency of their production.

Throughout his career, Gisbert has been principal investigator of multiple national projects and member of European consortia within the framework of the FP7 and H2020 programs related to aquaculture. He also stands out as coordinator of the Ibero-American network LARVAplus, funded by CYTED, in which 19 research centers and 11 companies from nine countries participate, focused on the promotion of aquaculture in Ibero-America and the transfer of knowledge to the sector.

In addition to his intense scientific activity, Gisbert has an extensive track record in knowledge transfer to the productive sector. He has actively participated in the design and execution of collaborative projects with national and international companies to improve the quality of production processes in aquaculture, optimize animal health and increase the sustainability of the sector. His experience also includes training and technical advisory actions, as well as the direction of doctoral theses and applied research works.

He is also a member of the Nutrition and Feeding Specialist Group and the Larviculture Specialist Group of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS). He serves as an associate editor for the scientific journals Frontiers in Physiology and Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, among others.

With more than 240 scientific publications and an H-index of 44, the Catalan researcher has become an undisputed benchmark in the field of international aquaculture. His career exemplifies the values that the CIM Award aims to recognize: scientific excellence, commitment to sustainability and real impact on the marine environment and society.

“Dr. Gisbert’s contributions are a source of inspiration for our research staff. His leadership, capacity for innovation and vocation for transfer constitute a model to look up to,” said the director of the CIM, Daniel Rey.

The CIM has the CIGUS recognition from the Xunta de Galicia, which accredits the quality and impact of its research, and whose activity is co-financed by the European Union through the FEDER 21-27 Program.
