Many dinoflagellates, a major component of marine phytoplankton, produce resistant structures called cysts as part of their life cycle. Cysts are a key survival strategy and also contribute to the geographic dispersal of the species. Resting cysts have the potential to fossilize; therefore, the history of plankton dynamics can be traced by analyzing their cyst sedimentary record. Dinoflagellate cysts are a valuable tool in a variety of disciplines whose study can take different approaches.
In this workshop, supported by the CIM and the University of Vigo, our objective is to discuss current issues related to dinoflagellate cyst research and work to improve methodologies (including sampling strategies) to study past and present cyst distributions and ecology.
Around 30 scientists from different countries and institutions will meet to share their latest research and discuss the following topics:
Modern biology and ecology: studies of the life cycle of dinoflagellates, bloom dynamics and cyst distributions related to environmental gradients.
Paleogenetic and geochemical approaches: application in paleoceanography and other cyst studies.
Aplicacións das novas tecnoloxías (IA) en palinoloxía.
Paleoceanography: fossil cyst records to reconstruct past marine ecosystems (Late Quaternary), interpretation of past environmental signals.
Taxonomy of dinoflagellate cysts.
This event presents a unique opportunity to interact with a diverse community of scientists and experts in the field of dinoflagellate cysts and is designed to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, discussion of cutting-edge research, and exploration of new avenues of collaboration.
The workshop will include practical roundtables, oral presentation sessions and a field trip where attendees will be able to share their research experience, exchange relevant ideas and work together to develop a list of recommendations on how to improve dinoflagellate cyst studies and provide a summary that could eventually lead to the publication of a white paper.
