CIM researchers will promote scientific vocations among more than 540 girls and boys on the occasion of 11F

Once again, researchers from the Marine Research Center (CIM-UVigo) are participating in the February 11 Initiative, which at the University of Vigo is coordinated by the Scientific and Innovation Culture Unit, to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at the national level. Thus, between February 1 and 15, seven scientists will visit seven educational centers in A Guarda, Redondela, Vigo and Vilagarcía de Arousa to inspire scientific vocations, create female role models in the field of science, promote practices that foster gender equality and highlight the role of women in science among more than 540 girls and boys.

Through talks and workshops, they will present their work to students from Preschool, Primary, Secondary and High School. Under the titles of “Science in Daily Life”, “Women and Oceanography”, “What do whales, oil and most of the oxygen we breathe have in common?”, “Effects of global change on shellfishing on foot and the gender perspective”, “The microworld of plants”, “Climate change and the sea” and “Researchers of past and future oceans”, researchers Estefanía Pereira, Cecilia Costas, Beatriz Mouriño, Elsa Vázquez, Sara Varela, Julia Ameneiro and Paula Diz, respectively, will offer these girls and boys a unique opportunity to have first-hand contact with science, in general, and with marine research, in particular.

Presentation of the prizes of the “Marie Tharp” competition

Also within the framework of the celebration of the 11F, the awards ceremony for the Marie Tharp Competition convened by the Equality Commission of the CIM-UVigo and aimed at predoctoral and postdoctoral female researchers of the center who wanted to tell their work in a one-minute audiovisual piece will take place.

The jury of this competition, named after the oceanographic cartographer and marine geologist Marie Tharp, co-author of the first world map of the ocean floor relief, has decided to award María Alborja Valado in the predoctoral category and Sara Gamboa Jurado-Centurión in the junior postdoctoral category, while Iria García Moreiras will receive a special mention. The awards ceremony will take place on February 10 at 13:00 hours in the lecture hall of the Experimental Sciences Building.

eXXperimenta in Feminine

In addition, researchers from the EphysLab group, which belongs to the center, will participate in the eXXperimenta en Feminino information fair, which will be held on Friday, February 10, in the Praza do Bispo Cesáreo, located in the center of the city of Ourense. The initiative is organized by the Faculty of Sciences, the School of Computer Engineering, the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering and the University School of Nursing of the Ourense campus and has the support of the City Council of Ourense. There will be 13 stands open to the public where interested people can come and discover science from the hands of the researchers of the campus.

The research activity of the CIM is supported by the Xunta de Galicia and the European Union through their co-financing under the Galicia ERDF Operational Programme 2014–2020.
