CIM researchers publish a book on the practical application of cloud and serverless computing

After a decade of development, a high percentage of the population, including the scientific community, now use cloud computing. However, despite this widespread use, its users are not fully aware of the potential of this technology. To help in this regard and with the aim of providing the interested public with practical examples of the use of cloud computing and serverless computing, researchers from the CIM of the Ourense campus published the book Cloud and Serverless Computing for Scientists. A Primer. The authors of the publication, from the international publisher Springer, are Juan Antonio Añel, professor and researcher at the Environmental Physics Laboratory (Ephyslab-CIM); Diego Pérez, PhD researcher from the same group; and Javier Rodeiro, professor at the School of Computer Engineering on the Ourense campus.

The book, explain those responsible, offers an introduction to serverless computing to students, research staff and R&D organizations through several practical examples. “Rather than focus exclusively on computational problems related to cloud computing, we are focused on addressing the multidisciplinary applications of cloud computing for daily research work in public institutions and private companies”, their authors point out. Examples include fields of application such as archeology, geosciences, computer science, medicine, and physics. Additionally, the publication can be useful for information technology professionals who want to know the current and future needs of the scientific community.

With 3000 copies in electronic book format sold since its publication, its responsibles highlight the good reception that the work is having among different audiences.
