Raising fish in the sea: what happens when they escape?

On Tuesday, September 22 at 11h, Pablo Sánchez Jerez, professor at the Universidad de Alicante (UA) and lecturer in the Department of Marine Sciences and Applied Biology at the UA, presented the lecture Criando peces en el mar: ¿qué sucede cuando se escapan?.

One of the sectors most affected by extreme events linked to climate change is marine aquaculture, especially due to biomass losses and damage to its facilities. The escape of fish from aquaculture in marine cages is considered a serious threat to natural biodiversity in coastal ecosystems, since escaped fish can cause undesirable genetic effects in native populations through interbreeding, as well as ecological effects through predation, competition, and the transmission of diseases to wild fish. The GLORIA project (Global Change Resilience in Aquaculture), funded by the Fundación Biodiversidad, aims to develop mitigation and contingency plans for floating marine cages in a global change scenario in which extreme climatic events will affect these facilities more frequently and with greater intensity.

Pablo Sánchez, principal investigator of the GLORIA project and a specialist in environmental management of aquaculture, presented in his lecture the management needs for the prevention and mitigation of fish escapes in aquaculture, paying special attention to what may occur in salmon farming.
