On Tuesday, July 21, the lectures of the Café con Sal series resumed. Due to the situation caused by COVID-19, and following the appropriate anti-contagion measures and the guidelines of the competent authorities, the lectures will be held virtually.
The first speakers will be Tania Ballesteros and Ana Tubío, researchers from the Coastal Ecology Group of CIM-UVigo, who will present the lecture Xestión de recursos pesqueiros: bioloxía do pepino de mar e a navalla na Ría de Vigo e a súa aplicación na xestión pesqueira.
The speakers will present the main results of two research projects funded by the Consellería do Mar of the Xunta de Galicia: “Estudo da variabilidade espacial do ciclo reprodutivo da navalla (Ensis magnus) na Ría de Vigo e a súa aplicación á xestión pesqueira” and “Estudo da bioloxía, status poboacional e diversidade xenética da holoturia (Holothuria forskali) na Ría de Vigo”. Both projects, carried out between 2017 and 2020, are part of the research actions led by the Centro de Investigaciones Marinas of the Xunta de Galicia (CIMA), conducted in collaboration with ECIMAT, the Coastal Ecology Group of CIM-UVigo, and ANFACO-CECOPESCA.
In the first lecture, Tania Ballesteros (Ecocost, CIM-UVigo) presented the biometric measure that is most suitable for monitoring the fishery, the aspects of the reproductive cycle to be considered in fisheries management (spawning season, size at first maturity, etc.), and the data obtained at ECIMAT on the larval and juvenile growth of this species.
Next, Ana Tubío (Ecocost, CIM-UVigo) presented the final results of the project on the study of the spatio-temporal variability of the reproductive cycle of the razor clam and its application to fisheries management in the Ría de Vigo. These results include the size at first maturity of this species and the platform developed within the framework of this project, Navalleando, an application that will allow the adoption of rapid management measures taking into account the variability of the razor clam’s reproductive cycle.
