The Peiraos de Solpor project, launched by the Port of Vigo and the Coastal Ecology group of the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo, was awarded on June 24 by the International Association of Ports (IAPH) with the so-called “Green Oscar”, an award from the World Sustainable Ports Program. As explained by the Faro de Vigo, the project won in the category of “Dialogue with the community and port city” over the 45 candidates presented and, in the final phase, over a consortium from the US and Canada and a South Korean terminal.
By installing artificial reefs and creating a marine observatory for the public in the docks of A Laxe and Bouzas, this project aims to recover the good state of the marine ecosystems in the area, improve the growth of plant and animal species native to the area, reduce the carbon footprint through CO2 capture and promote awareness and sensitization about the importance of conserving the ecosystems of the port area.
This award joins other international distinctions under the Puerto Verde plan and the Blue Growth strategy.
The research activity of the EcoCost group (CIM-UVigo) has the support of the Xunta de Galicia and the European Union, through its co-financing under the FEDER/FSE Galicia 2014-2020 Operational Program.
