Oceans Secrets donates two telemetric buoys to CIM-UVigo

The Ocean Secrets company has just donated two buoys to collect telemetric data to the Marine Research Centre of the University of Vigo. This type of buoys allows monitoring by satellite, providing real-time information on their position as well as other environmental parameters. The buoys will be incorporated into the equipment of the ECIMAT oceanography unit, making them available to all CIM-UVigo research staff and ECIMAT users.

The use of telemetric buoys is becoming more widespread in oceanography, since it allows the monitoring and study of water masses for prolonged periods of time. This property is due to the great autonomy of these instruments and their ability to transmit information from any point. This makes them a very valuable tool for ocean circulation studies. Moreover, in recent years, these buoys have increased their applications, able to house different sensors that simultaneously provide environmental information. This allows not only to know the movement of the water masses, but also to characterize them for prolonged periods of time.

For these reasons, the use of telemetry is becoming more and more extensive, because it allows a significant increase in observations in the natural environment, with minimal environmental impact and low cost, when they are compared to traditional oceanographic surveys. Likewise, they also increase the number of observation points, the frequency of measurements and the duration of observation periods, making them the ideal complement for studies carried out in the marine environment. Because of all this, we want to thank Ocean Secrets for choosing CIM-UVigo for this donation and for its collaboration with the marine research that is carried out at the Centre.
