Effects of plastic additives on marine fish, a proteomic approach

On Tuesday, September 15 at 11h, Alexandre Martinez Schönemann, a predoctoral researcher in the Ecotoxicology and Marine Pollution Research Team – EcoTox (Ecocost Group, CIM-UVigo), presented the talk Effects of plastic additives on marine fish, a proteomic approach.

The uses of plastic are widely varied, as are the combinations of additives that can be added to it. Properties such as greater flexibility, color, or resistance to heat or fire are achieved by adding substances that, in addition to producing the desired effect, in some cases may have harmful effects on living beings. The race between the appearance of new additives and the scientific verification of their potential impact is accelerating, and it is increasingly necessary to use new tools such as proteomics to determine these effects.

Alexandre Martínez, supervised by Ricardo Beiras (Ecotox, CIM-UVigo) and Angel P. Diz (Population Genetics and Cytogenetics, CIM-UVigo), is developing his doctoral thesis within the DO MAR doctoral program with the main objective of describing the effects of certain additives on a marine fish species new in Europe, Cyprinodon variegatus, using proteomics.

During his conference, Alexandre spoke about the efforts dedicated to describing the effects of certain plastic additives on marine organisms using proteomics. The speaker focused on his study species, C. variegatus, and on one of the most common effects: endocrine disruption. The work presented by Alexandre is part of his doctoral thesis, funded by the Xunta de Galicia.

Due to the situation caused by COVID-19 and following the indications of the competent authorities, the conference was held virtually.
