Singular oceanographic infrastructures at ECIMAT: mesocosms and HF Radar

On Tuesday, February 18, Jose González, head of the oceanography service at ECIMAT (CIM-UVigo), presented within the “Café con Sal” series the lecture Singular oceanographic infrastructures at ECIMAT: mesocosms and HF Radar, in which he presented the mesocosm facilities and the high-frequency radar (HF radar), the associated projects, and their involvement in European networks.

Singular infrastructures can be defined as large facilities or equipment dedicated to cutting-edge research, open to the national and international scientific community, with high investment and/or maintenance costs. At ECIMAT, two examples of this type of infrastructure can be found: the HF radar and the mesocosm facilities. HF radars are a marine technology that provide maps of surface currents in near real-time in areas ranging from a few kilometers up to 200 km. These systems are rare due to their cost and installation requirements. Currently, there are only two high-frequency radars with a resolution of 175 m, and one of them is located at ECIMAT. For this reason, the system installed at ECIMAT has another singularity: its frequency and, therefore, its resolution. The mesocosm facilities at ECIMAT are also singular, as they are the only marine mesocosms present on the Iberian Peninsula and the only ones in Europe located in an upwelling region.
