How will climate change affect living organisms in the Rías Baixas?

On Tuesday, March 3, Marisela Des Villanueva, a predoctoral researcher from the EPhysLab group (Environmental Physics Laboratory, CIM-UVigo), presented within the “Café con Sal” series the lecture How will climate change affect living organisms in the Rías Baixas?.

Global change in marine and coastal areas affects living organisms in many different ways, so it is necessary to analyze the possible and probable vulnerabilities of these systems in order to establish mitigation and adaptation measures. Within the framework of the MarRisk project, EPhysLab, in collaboration with the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and Rey Juan Carlos University, studies how climate change may affect living organisms in the Rías Baixas using the numerical model Delft3D.

Supervised by Maite de Castro (Ephyslab, CIM-UVigo), Marisela is developing her doctoral thesis within the DO*MAR program, with the aim of applying the numerical model Delft3D in the Rías Baixas and the adjacent coast in order to analyze the hydrodynamics of the area and the effects of climate change on the organisms that live there.

During the conference, Marisela Des introduced the effects of climate change on upwelling, the main factor responsible for the high productivity of the rías, and described the effects of climate change on mussel aquaculture, as well as the changes in the distribution of two species of macroalgae, Himanthalia elongata and Bifurcaria bifurcata.
