Scientific work is one of the engines of humanity’s progress, the fruits of research and innovation serve to climb the steps in the evolution and improvement of the lives of human beings and planet Earth in general. These fruits are the guiding thread of the 2020 almanac of the Linguistic Normalization Area. Under the motto Research bears fruit, each month is associated with a fruit: carambola, mangosteen, custard apple, lychee, passion fruit, papaya, pitaya, rambutan, tree tomato, durian, persimmon and milgranda. Along with the twelve fruits, twelve research groups from the University of Vigo are committed to the defense and visibility of the Galician language in the scientific field. And the fact is that in the academic institution this 2020 will be the year of scientific dissemination in Galician, so the ANL hopes that this calendar will help to serve a double function: on the one hand, to publicize the work of a small selection of R&D groups and, on the other, to position the language as a vehicle for scientific communication. Next to each group and each fruit, a phrase from great scientists and thinkers in the history of humanity, such as Isaac Newton, Castelao, Ramón y Cajal or Rosalind Franklin.

2020, month by month
January starts with the Biological Oceanography group, from the UVigo Marine Research Center (CIM-UVigo), which studies the interactions between microorganisms that inhabit the oceans and their environment, in order to understand their diversity, their distribution patterns and their responses to environmental changes, including those caused by human activity.
February is dedicated to the Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Group, Ecoevo, also from CIM-UVigo, a team that studies the ecological processes that take place at the genetic, individual and ecosystem levels, working mainly with freshwater organisms and forest ecosystems.
In March, the protagonists are the members of the Geological Oceanography and Biogeochemistry Group (CIM-UVigo), who develop various lines of research from different fields within the earth sciences, such as the study of marine sediments, the variations and evolution of oceanography and climatology throughout the geological history of the earth, and the processes and biogeochemical cycles that develop in it.
The month of April is for the Ecological Economy, Agroecology and History Group, which addresses issues related to the rural environment, trying to explain its decline and seeking strategies to enhance its human development, always under the premise of the need for a profound transformation of the economic system and its main institutions.
The Lamprey Neurobiology Group stars in the month of May, explaining how this species is a model for study in several fields of science, including the evolution of the vertebrate brain.
The June page is for the EQ2 Biomass and Sustainable Development Group, at Cinbio, which focuses on the design of new processes to value the different components of plant and algal biomass, with the aim of obtaining high added value products for applications in the chemical, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
The dx5digital & graphic art research group occupies the month of July. The researchers in this team specialize in contemporary art with an expanded field, prioritizing a triple focus on research in the fine arts, which mixes fundamental theory, scientific analysis and artistic practice.
The Ecotoxicology and Marine Pollution team (Ecotox, EcoCost group, CIM-UVigo) will present its lines of work on the effects of pollutants on ecosystems in August. This team works on compiling information that provides scientific foundations to develop useful environmental criteria and standards for the protection of our sea.
The last month of summer is for the Mycology Laboratory, of the Environmental Biology Group 2, which is dedicated to the study and knowledge of mushroom-producing fungi (macromycetes), both from the point of view of cataloguing, classification and autoecology (taxonomy) and in relation to the ancestral, present and future uses of these living beings in Galicia, in order to develop sustainable use in the Galician forestry world.
Autumn arrives with the Medicine and Public Health Group, which is dedicated to the promotion of health and prevention of problems that affect physical, mental and social health, and to aspects related to the most persistent diseases in society, such as rheumatic, cardiovascular, cancer, etc.
The Spanish Language and Sign Language Research Group (Griles) is the chosen one for the month of November. Its work focuses on contributing to improving the status of LSE in society and the recognition of LS as the natural language of the deaf community.
2020 closes with the Statistical Inference, Decision and Operations Research Group: SiDOR, the only one in southern Galicia specialized in statistics and operations research, a field of knowledge that deals with mathematical modeling for decision-making under uncertainty.
