The Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo repeats its resounding success in participating in the activities organized this weekend under the auspices of the second edition of the Ciencia Singular program, a scientific and technological dissemination plan co-financed by the Xunta de Galicia and the European Union through FEDER funds with which it seeks to make society aware of the work carried out in the unique research centers of the Vigo university. The Biomedical Research Center also held activities this weekend on the Ourense campus and in the city of Vigo, however its open day will take place next Thursday the 5th, visit for which all places are already filled.
“The success of these activities open to the public each year shows us that society is interested in knowing what we do, in knowing what is done next door. These types of conferences are essential for people to discover the cutting-edge research that is being developed in the research centers of the University of Vigo, for them to learn about the pioneering projects that our research staff is working on and, why not, to awaken vocations”, emphasizes Daniel Rey, director of the CIM. These unique centers concentrate the research excellence of the University and, as such, receive specific funding from the Xunta de Galicia and the University itself for their scientific performance.
Marine science from the sea and from land
More than 300 people participated in the three activities proposed by the Marine Research Center for the occasion, free of charge and aimed at all audiences, including a boat trip to learn about some of the particularities of the estuary and some of the methods used by the research staff to collect samples, in addition to workshops and guided tours of the facilities of this center at the Toralla Marine Research Station (Ecimat) and guided tours of the laboratories that the research center has in the Cacti Tower, on the campus.
The organization values “the success of the response” despite the postponement of the initial date due to weather issues. In fact, the 150 places for the Embárcate con CIM activity were filled in record time, standing out as the activity most in demand by the public both for the boat trip from the Náutico pier in Vigo to Toralla with activities on board and for the guided tours of the interior of the Ecimat, for which the participants showed a lot of curiosity. For their part, another 150 people participated in the activities Conece o CIM en Toralla and Conece o CIM en la campus, which included guided tours of the different facilities of the research center, in which they explained their most active lines of research and the equipment and instruments they use in their studies. The topics that generated the most interest among the public were climate change and plastics.
This Thursday the 5th, a window opens to biomedical research in Vigo
Although the open day of the Biomedical Research Center, Cinbio, will be this Thursday in Vigo, this past weekend they have already carried out several informative activities. On Thursday the 28th they set up an information stand on Príncipe Street to learn about the research carried out at the center, while on Saturday the 29th the Polytechnic building on the Ourense campus hosted a series of activities related to bioinformatics and bioactive products.
For the fun and educational day on Thursday 5th at the Cinbio facilities on the Vigo campus, all places are already filled. The program of activities includes three workshops: Immerse yourself in cancer and learn how to extract DNA; The GPS of your brain and CO2 the yin and yang of our ecosystem.
