AtlanTTic was the earliest to arrive, but in the last weeks of November and the first of December, the four unique research centers of the University of Vigo will gradually open our doors so that the public can learn about the secrets we hide in our laboratories, the experiments we develop and the innovative projects we work on.
The activities are part of the Disseminating Unique Science program, financed by the General Secretariat of Universities Activity through the FEDER/FSE Galicia 2014-2020 Operational Program, which aims to publicize research activity and its importance for society in general. The next event will be this Friday 28 and Saturday 29, when the Biomedical Research Center and the Marine Research Center will hold their open days, with workshops, guided tours, experiments, etc. The date and program of activities for the Research Center in Technologies, Energy and Industrial Processes (Cintecx) remain to be specified.
Boat trip, workshops and guided tours in Toralla to learn about the CIM
The CIM activities within the Disseminating Singular Science program were scheduled for this past weekend but, due to weather conditions, were moved to next Friday and Saturday, November 29 and 30. Its open days include three different activities: Embark with the CIM, Meet the CIM in Toralla and Meet the CIM on Campus, all of them free but with limited places, so it is necessary to register in advance through the website cienciasingular.gal.
The program will start on Friday with guided tours of the facilities on Toralla Island and, for the first time, the Cacti Tower on the university campus. Thus, at the Ecimat, participants will visit, for example, the dock, the pump room, the cultivation rooms, the research laboratories, etc., learning about the research support services carried out at the ECIMAT and some of the research projects currently being developed by CIM researchers. People who choose to visit the campus will tour the laboratories of three research groups that carry out their work at the Cacti Tower: The Future Oceans Lab (FOL), the Coastal Ecology group (Ecocost) and the Marine and Environmental Geology Group (GEOMA). A free bus service will be available for campus visits, departing from Plaza de América and Plaza de España in Vigo. These two activities will be divided into three shifts each at 12:00, 15:30 and 17:00.
On Saturday 30th, the CIM invites the public to a boat trip between the A Laxe pier and the Toralla island, where participants will be able to discover interesting curiosities about the Vigo estuary and see an underwater robot in action. Once on the island, they will visit the Ecimat guided by the CIM’s own technical and research staff and will carry out an interactive laboratory activity before returning to the boat. Three groups will be available for this activity, departing at 09.00, 12.15 and 15.30 from the A Laxe pier.
Cinbio is announced in Ourense and Vigo
The Biomedical Research Center has decided to make itself known both in Vigo, where its facilities are located, and in the city of Ourense. The first of the activities took place this past Friday with the installation of a tent on Paseo Street, in Ourense, which will give way this Friday, November 29, to a series of activities related to bioinformatics and bioactive products in the Polytechnic building of Ourense from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Those who attend will be able to participate in workshops on artificial intelligence in the healthcare field and on the role of active biomolecules in everyday life, for example, antioxidants or biopolymers.
This week the activities in Vigo also start, with the installation of an information stand in the Porta Príncipe galleries that can be visited on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This action will be completed with an open day at the Cinbio facilities on Thursday, December 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:20 p.m. in which attendees will be able to participate in three different activities: Immerse yourself in cancer and learn how to extract DNA; The GPS of your brain and CO2 the yin and yang of our ecosystem.
150 people at the School of Telecommunications Engineering to discover atlanTTic
The research center in Telecommunications Technologies, atlanTTic, was the first to develop its activities within Divulgando Ciencia Singular, achieving a very good response among citizens. On the 15th, more than 150 people came to the center’s facilities at the School of Telecommunications Engineering to participate in a dozen workshops and experiments through which they learned in detail about new communication technologies and their application to everyday life.
Entre outros temas, as persoas participantes puideron descubrir, coñecer e probar de primeira man ferramentas como as como apps de acompañamento a persoas maiores ou de detección precoz do alzhéimer, as impresoras 3D, os nanosatélites, o recoñecemento facial, as ferramentas de detección de manipulación en imaxes ou o uso do radar e a xeolocalización para loitar contra os incendios, entre outras. Un “balance moi positivo” desta xornada que “volve reflectir o interese da cidadanía por todo o traballo que estamos a desenvolver en atlanTTic, onde abordamos numerosos retos da sociedade con tecnoloxías de telecomunicación en ámbitos como a saúde, o medio ambiente ou a seguridade nas comunicacións. Actividades como estas permítenos facer chegar este traballo á sociedade, que saiba que se fai investigación de calidade cerca, nos centros da Universidade de Vigo, en moitos casos con xente moza e moi motivada”, salienta Carlos Mosquera, director do centro de investigación. Grande éxito acadaron tamén as visitas guiadas laboratorio de seguimento de satélites que complementaban a actividade e que esgotaron todas as prazas dispoñibles en pouco tempo.
