The unique research centers of the University of Vigo will open their doors to the public again from next Friday, November 15. Under the auspices of the second edition of the Disseminating Unique Science program, the Center for Research in Telecommunications Technologies (atlanTTic), the Marine Research Center (CIM), the Center for Biomedical Research (Cinbio) and the Center for Research in Technologies, Energies and Industrial Processes (Cintecx) will develop a program of activities throughout the months of November and December that will allow “to learn firsthand about the work that is done in these centers, with research that provides added value to society, useful knowledge that serves to improve the quality of life and the well-being of society”, explains Belén Rubio, Vice-Chancellor for Research. Rubio highlights that these are centers with hundreds of researchers who, over the years, have been able to attract tens of millions of euros in R&D projects and contracts, register dozens of patents and add thousands of publications, “and despite all that dedicated effort and the fruits collected, society hardly knows or recognizes their work,” emphasizes the vice-chancellor.
Free of charge and after registering on the website cienciasingular.gal, anyone, both adults and children, can participate in this program of activities for the whole family financed by the General Secretariat of Universities of the Department of Culture, Education and University Planning of the Xunta de Galicia, through the Aid Program for the accreditation, structuring and improvement of unique research centers and consolidated strategic groups of the University System of Galicia co-financed by the Feder within the framework of the Feder Galicia 2014-2020 operational program.
Activities to discover science and technology and awaken vocations
Disseminating Singular Science will start this Friday, November 15th at the School of Telecommunications Engineering, where, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., atlanTTic researchers will develop a dozen workshops and three guided tours of prominent spaces in the center to “bring the work we do to society in a way that even makes it possible to get closer to the technology behind it through workshops and visits,” says Carlos Mosquera, director of the research center. Mosquera recalls that at atlanTTic addresses numerous societal challenges with telecommunications technologies, in areas such as health, the environment or communication security, “these technologies are present in our lives more than we imagine, sometimes in unsuspected ways, and we see it necessary to contribute to their dissemination, since as a society we need to know in order to give an opinion with judgment. Thus, satellite communications, optical communications, 5G… everything has mathematics, physics and a significant dose of engineering, which can awaken vocations among the youngest and oldest”, he emphasizes.
For its part, the Marine Research Center will invite all citizens to participate on November 22 and 23 in Set sail with CIM Discover CIM in Toralla and Discover CIM on campus three actions with which the population “will be able to learn about the cutting-edge marine research carried out at the University of Vigo and its importance for society”, explains Daniel Rey, director of the CIM. Participants will discover the Vigo estuary from a more scientific point of view with a boat trip, learn about the daily work carried out by scientists with the interactive laboratory activity or tour the facilities on campus and on Toralla island during guided tours and, according to Rey, “getting to know us is the best way for society to understand that quality research is being done here nearby”.
Cinbio, for its part, will begin its activities on December 5, with the installation of an information tent that Thursday on Rúa do Príncipe in Vigo, an event that will also take place on a date to be determined on Paseo de Ourense. There, interested people will be able to register for the activities that will be held at Cinbio itself on the Vigo campus and on the Ourense campus, “open days, organized with the aim of letting people know what we do in the field of research and health. The idea is for them to touch, see and be able to see the laboratories,” explain the Biomedical Research Center.
The scientific dissemination program will end with the activities of the Research Center in Technologies, Energies and Industrial Processes (Cintecx).
