Stock Assessment with the LBSPR Method: Application to Sedentary Resource Fisheries with Limited Data

CIM-UVigo is organizing the workshop “Avaliación de stocks co método LBSPR: aplicación a pesquerías de recursos sedentarios con datos limitados,” which will take place on December 3, 4, and 5 at ECIMAT. The workshop, taught by Jeremy Prince (Murdoch University, Australia), is part of the research action “Estudo da variabilidade espacial do ciclo reprodutivo da navalla na Ría de Vigo e a súa aplicación á xestión pesqueira,” funded by the Consellería do Mar, and is aimed at stakeholders involved in the management of sedentary resources in Galicia (collectors, technical assistants from fisheries guilds, and local biologists from the Consellería do Mar) as well as researchers interested in the subject.

The LBSPR method (Length-Based assessment of Spawning Potential Ratio) is a simple, intuitive, and extremely efficient method for performing instantaneous stock assessments and for developing simple management strategies in small-scale, data-poor fisheries. Based on classical ecological principles, LBSPR uses the existing relationships between species’ biological characteristics (mortality, size at first maturity, and the growth parameters k and Linf) and the size structure of the catches, in order to estimate size selectivity, relative fishing effort, and the resulting spawning potential (Spawning Potential Ratio, SPR). The resulting data help understand the status of the stock and its sustainability, which can be used to review the exploitation tools applied in the assessed fishery.

On the first day, Prince will describe the theory underlying the LBSPR approach, the tools developed to support its application, and some case studies. The second and third days will be practical, focusing on applying the method to each participant’s own cases.

Registration will be open until November 28. Applications will be accepted in order of registration, giving priority to the attendance of stakeholders involved in fisheries management in Galicia.
