On Tuesday, November 26, the final session of the 9th edition of the “Café con Sal” lecture series will take place at ECIMAT. The floor will be given to Iratxe Rubio, a PhD student at the Future Oceans Lab (FOL, CIM-UVigo) and the Basque Center for Climate Change, who will present some of the challenges caused to international fisheries by climate change in the talk “Impacts of climate change on tropical tunas, how can we adapt an international fishery?”.
Iratxe’s doctoral thesis addresses the spatial impacts and adaptation options to climate change in international fisheries from a holistic, social, and ecological perspective. Her work is part of the CLOCK project (Climate Adaptation to Shifting Stocks), led by Elena Ojea (FOL, CIM-UVigo) in collaboration with the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3), and funded by an ERC Starting Grant. The CLOCK project aims to identify and understand the new challenges imposed by climate change on marine systems and to develop an adaptation framework that integrates fisheries management within socio-ecological systems, in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of resources and livelihoods.
In response to the climate change impacts already observed in fisheries, it is expected that improving and understanding the adaptive capacity of socio-ecological systems (SES) will provide climate-resilient development pathways. In this talk, Iratxe will present how perceptions of adaptation capacity needs among different organizations within an international fisheries SES are related to their connectivity and social organization. This allows exploration of which domains of adaptive actions they are likely to influence most and which organizations could facilitate them, which is crucial for climate change adaptation.
