Doctoral thesis offer at the Biological Oceanography Group and Linnaeus University

The Biological Oceanography group of the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo (CIM-UVigo) and Linnaeus University (Sweden) offer a doctoral thesis to be carried out within the doctoral program in Science, Technology and Management of the Sea (Campus do Mar), under the direction of Sandra Martínez (CIM-UVigo) and Jarone Pinhassi (Linnaeus University, Sweden).

The thesis project proposes the study of the mechanisms involved in the remineralization by marine bacteria of essential macronutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the NW of the Iberian Peninsula. These processes will be related to carbon and energy flows in the ecosystem, as well as to events of different microalgal blooms, with special attention to toxic algae. The project foresees the analysis of metatranscriptomes of natural microplankton communities of the NW of the Iberian Peninsula sampled in the context of the REMEDIOS project, and includes an innovative approach in which state-of-the-art molecular techniques will be applied at different spatial and temporal sampling scales. The research will incorporate concepts and discussions from the fields of ecology, genomics, oceanography, biochemistry and bioinformatics.

The student will not only join the REMEDIOS project but will have the opportunity to interact directly with the Biological Oceanography Group, the Linneus University Center for Ecology and Evolution of Microbial Model Systems and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.
