On Tuesday, October 1, Pedro Campoy, predoctoral researcher of the Coastal Ecology Group (EcoCost, CIM-UVigo), will present, in a new session of the “Café con Sal” lecture series, the talk “Endocrine disruption by plastic additives in sea urchin, Paracentrotus lividus,” in which he will present part of the results of his doctoral thesis.
The research team in Ecotoxicology and Marine Pollution (Ecotox), part of the EcoCost group, works on the comprehensive assessment of marine pollution through the combined use of biological tools, analytical chemistry, and the collection of marine ecotoxicological information, with the aim of providing scientific foundations that can be used to develop criteria and environmental standards for the protection of coastal marine ecosystems.
Pedro Campoy, part of this research team and supervised by Ricardo Beiras, is developing in his doctoral thesis a tool to assess potential endocrine disruption caused by different contaminants from urban wastewater in marine organisms, mainly those that have been shown to reach relevant concentrations in marine ecosystems (plastic additives such as phthalates, alkylphenols, bromates, phosphates, or UV filters). The development of this tool focuses on evaluating the response at the molecular and tissue levels (gonad, digestive system, and coelom) in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus during the sexual maturation phase.
During his lecture, Pedro will present the preliminary results of the effects of these contaminants on the physiology, histology, and proteomics of the sea urchin. The lecture will take place at 11.00h in the ECIMAT auditorium and will be broadcast live at http://tv.uvigo.es/es/directo/1.html, later being available on UVigoTV and on our website.
