The Coastal Ecology Group (EcoCost) of the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo (CIM-UVigo) is looking for a candidate to carry out a doctoral thesis in cryobiology applied to the marine environment, to be developed in the Functional Preservation Service of Marine Biological Resources of ECIMAT (University of Vigo), under the direction of Dr. Estefanía Paredes and Dr. Jesús Troncoso.
Description:
The management team has experience in theoretical and applied cryobiology, as well as cryopreservation of marine invertebrate cells such as sea urchins or mussels, and their line of research is world-leading in the application of cryobiology in the marine environment (Paredes, 2015; Paredes and Mazur 2016; Pheres et al. 2019).
The theme of the thesis will focus on the use of cutting-edge techniques of “VITRIFICATION WITH ULTRA-RAPID LASER THAWING FOR THE CRYOPRESERVATION OF OVOCIES AND EMBRYOS OF MODEL MARINE ORGANISMS”, of commercial interest in aquaculture and biodiversity conservation.
We are looking for someone with an interest in developing studies of cryopreservation, the operation of laser thawing, transmission and scanning electron microscopy analysis work and the study of damage detection parameters and apoptotic processes in marine invertebrates. The thesis will allow us to advance the knowledge of a new technique such as vitrification with laser thawing with repercussions on the cryopreservation of oocytes, which will represent an extraordinary advance in this field of research.
Training is offered within the Doctoral Program of the Campus of International Excellence “Do Mar” (Marine Sciences, Technology and Management). Pre-registration date: 1-12 Sept 2019.

The candidate must have a competitive file for the application for scholarships/predoctoral contracts in the next calls (UVIGO, XUNTA, FPU, DO MAR…).

- Recent degree in Biology or Marine Sciences.
- Intermediate/high level of English.
- Competitive application for obtaining aid.
- Thesis on related topics, attendance at conferences and published articles will be valued.
