The Fondation Pacifique, a non-profit organization based in Geneva, returns after four and a half years of expedition following the trail of Magellan/Elcano, aboard the Swiss sailing ship Fleur de Passion. Their expedition, called “The Ocean Mapping Expedition”, combines science, education, and culture.
Their campaign aimed to contribute to a better understanding of human impact on the ocean and to raise awareness about the challenges it poses for sustainable development. The Fondation Pacifique, which arises directly from Swiss civil society, carried out various programs and missions for mapping microplastic pollution and ocean noise pollution, monitoring greenhouse gases at the surface, and observing the health of coral reefs, all in collaboration with different Swiss and international academic institutions. With a multidisciplinary and experience-sharing spirit, the Fleur de Passion hosted 60 adolescents undergoing socio-educational reintegration and more than 100 passengers, as well as 20 “resident” artists—10 women and 10 men—who took turns on board throughout the voyage.
Visit of the sailing ship Fleur de Passion to Vigo
From Seville to Seville, this expedition wanted to make a stop in Vigo and invite anyone interested in learning more about their work to a lecture that will take place on July 22 at 12:00 h in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Marine Sciences.
The lecture will feature members of the crew of the sailing ship Fleur de Passion, collaborating partners and protagonists of the expedition, the researcher Jesús Gago from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, and José González, Head of the Oceanography Unit at ECIMAT of the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo.
The lecture will be followed by a visit aboard the sailing ship Fleur de Passion from 18:00 to 20:00 at the Monte Real Yacht Club in Baiona. To attend the visit, it is necessary to send an email with your full name to Yaiza Santana: yaiza@pacifique.ch.
