On Thursday 18 July, the special Assemble Plus edition of the “Coffee with Salt” conference took place at ECIMAT. This session featured a brief presentation of the Assemble Plus Transnational Access (TNA) programme entitled “The Assemble Plus Transnational Access Programme: an opportunity to access ECIMAT services”, given by Fiz da Costa, local liaison for the TNA programme at ECIMAT (CIM-UVigo), and two lectures given by researchers who were at that time under the TNA programme: “Coastal seabird studies: understanding the importance of currents, topography and meteorology when estimating responses to environmental change”, presented by James Waggitt, Professor of Marine Biology at the School of Ocean Sciences (Bangor University, UK) and “What drives contrasting patterns of genetic connectivity in Atlantic octocoral species?” given by Jamie Stevens, Professor of Molecular Ecology at the University of Exeter, UK.
In the first lecture, James Waggitt, whose research focuses on the behavioural and ecological factors affecting the abundance and distribution of cetaceans and seabirds, presented an overview of how the interactions of currents, topography and meteorology influence the distributions of seabirds that feed in coastal environments and how predicted changes in anthropogenic developments and climate change affect the habitat selection of species. The lecture summarised several studies across Europe, which assessed the reasons for habitat selection and the responses of seabirds that feed to environmental variability within these habitats.
Jamie Stevens, an expert in molecular ecology and evolutionary biology, explained the importance of population connectivity in metapopulation dynamics in marine systems and how this connectivity influences population persistence, migration rates and conservation decisions associated with marine protected areas (MPAs). In the talk, Jamie focused on studies of population structure and connectivity of two species of octocorals (Eunicella verrucosa and Alcyonium digitatum) from the northeast Atlantic. These studies, funded by Natural England and NERC, UK, have important implications for the conservation of E. verrucosa, a protected species in UK waters, and the designation and management of European MPAs.
