A series of conferences will analyze the latest computational advances in fluid simulation

On October 16 and 17, the Ourense campus will host the HPC for Geophysical Fluid Dynamics 2019 conference. The event, organized by the Environmental Physics Laboratory Group (Ephyslab) of the University of Vigo, will bring together specialists from different countries who use HPC (high performance computing) in excellent research to present the latest advances in the application of these techniques in the development of numerical models for fluid simulation.

The event, coordinated by Ephyslab researchers José Manuel Domínguez and Orlando García and linked to the specialization project of the Ourense campus as the Campus of Water, has a scientific committee including researchers from the Universities of Cantabria, A Coruña, Manchester (United Kingdom), Ghent (Belgium), and the Instituto Superior Técnico of Portugal. In addition to the Faculty of Sciences and the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering at the Ourense campus, the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo, CESGA, and the Spanish Supercomputing Network are also collaborating.

Tool for resource and risk management

Currently, the conference organizers explain, numerical modeling is “a fundamental tool” for resource management and water-related risk prevention. “It is important, for example, to predict the behavior of coastal protection systems in the face of increasingly frequent and intense storms due to climate change and to develop risk maps for flooding caused by periods of intense rainfall,” explain the Ephyslab researchers. For this reason, they add, these simulations usually require “the simulation of large domains with high resolution,” which involves a high computational cost, making it “imperative that numerical simulation models use HPC techniques to take advantage of the computational resources offered by supercomputing centers.”

Those attending HPC for Geophysical Fluid Dynamics 2019, indicate its managers, “will have the opportunity to listen to the interventions of experts in numerical modeling and HPC, as well as the developers of these models themselves”. During the conference, they point out, the latest advances in the development of the numerical models Iber, Dualsphysics and Ihfoam will be presented as well as applications that can only be studied thanks to the use of HPC. Precisely Ephyslab is working on the development of the first two models. Thus, they detail from this research group, Dualsphysics is a 3D fluid simulation model that uses particles and is used in simulations in which water violently impacts structures in three dimensions, such as coastal structures, and Iber, for its part, is a model used for the simulation of floods in two dimensions, to assess the scope and impact of transport phenomena in floods in areas such as river basins or estuaries.
