Between June 17 and 21, the XI edition of the university extension course “Xestión de Explotacións Acuícolas” will take place at ECIMAT. The course will be taught by 12 speakers who are specialists in aquaculture and business management, will consist of 11 seminars and 3 field trips, and can be credited with 1 elective credit.
Course objectives:
- To understand the cultivation process of various species, including both fish and bivalve mollusks.
- To understand the threats and opportunities that aquaculture activities pose to the environment.
- To identify the strengths and weaknesses of existing aquaculture farms.
- To identify the key elements that will determine the future of the aquaculture sector.
- To learn about designing competitive strategies suitable for the aquaculture sector.
- To learn tools and strategies for forecasting and setting prices in the aquaculture sector.
- To promote initiatives, challenges, and opportunities for entrepreneurship in the aquaculture sector, as well as possible sources of funding.
- To understand how to define marketing strategies for creating value in aquaculture products.
- To understand and use the tools and analyses for assessing the feasibility of aquaculture farm projects.
- To understand the process of producing value-added products from aquaculture products.
- To understand and use the tools and analyses for assessing the feasibility of aquaculture operation projects.
The course includes a visit to IGAFA (Galician Institute of Aquaculture Training on the Island of Arousa), a boat tour of the Ría de Arousa to learn all the details of mussel cultivation on rafts, and a visit to the PESCANOVA facilities (Pescanova Logistics Center in Porriño).
