The Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo, CIM-UVigo, formed by the 15 research groups dedicated to marine research at the University of Vigo and the Toralla Marine Science Station, Ecimat, received a visit this week from its external advisory committee that will be responsible for evaluating the management of the center and the adequacy and implementation of its strategy, taking into account internationalization and international infrastructure policies.
This committee is made up of six specialists in marine research and in the management of international research centers and/or European networks: Catherine Boyene, director of the Laboratoire de Biologie Intégrative des Modèles Marins (CNRS, France), scientific coordinator of the European Marine Research Network Euromarine and member of the Board of Directors of BioGenouest; David Paterson, Chief Executive of the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MASTS) and Chair of the Council of the European Marine Biological Resource Center (EMBRC-ERIC); Randi Elisabeth Taxt, Vice President of the Bergen Technology Transfer Office (Bergen Technology Transfer Office / Bergen Teknologioverføring AS, Norway); Igor Campillo, executive director of the Euskampus Foundation, managing entity of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, and Josep M. Parés, coordinator of Geochronology and Geology at the National Center for Research on Human Evolution, Cenieh.
Getting to know the activities of the different groups closely
The visit of this advisory committee started this Tuesday morning with a reception hosted by the Vice-Rector for Research, Belén Rubio, and also attended by the deans of the faculties of Marine Sciences and Biology, Miguel Ángel Nombela and Jesús M. Míguez; the director of the CIM-UVigo, Daniel Rey; the director of the Ecimat, José Manuel García; the director of the Research Support Centers, Benito Fernández, and the scientific committee of the CIM-UVigo..
In this first contact, Daniel Rey presented to the committee the origin, structure, organization, means of financing and the main indicators of the center, as well as the future plans and the strategy to be followed. Immediately afterwards, the members of the committee visited the Ecimat and Cacti facilities, being guided by the staff of both research support centers. In the afternoon, representatives of some of the CIM-UVigo research groups presented their lines of research and ongoing projects. Among them were the participation of Celia Olabarría and Estefanía Paredes, from the Coastal Ecology group, Ecocost; Moncho Gesteira, from the Environmental Physics Laboratory, Ephyslab; Emilio Rolán, from the Population Genetics and Cytogenetics group, XB2; and José Luis Soengas, from the Fish Physiology team, FB2. For their part, Elena Ojea (Future Oceans Lab) and Gianluca Marino (Paleoclimate Laboratory, Geoma) presented some of the emerging lines at the center.

Today, Wednesday, the advisory committee and members of the CIM-UVigo focused their activity on the discussion of the strategic lines to be followed by the CIM-UVigo in the future, both in its research projects and in other areas such as the recruitment of research talent and the transfer of research results.
