On Tuesday, May 21, María Oliviero and Simona Schiavo, researchers at the ENEA Research Centre – Portici (Italy), presented, as part of the “Café con Sal” series, the lecture “Efectos tóxicos dos microplásticos no medio mariño”, in which they summarized the impact of microplastics on marine organisms, focusing on the ecotoxic and genotoxic effects of plastic and its additives on marine planktonic larvae, and how this impact could affect higher trophic levels.
The annual global production of plastic is around 300 million tons and represents one of the greatest environmental concerns. Microplastics are present in the marine environment from the sea surface to the sediments. In this context, and with the support of the ASSEMBLE Plus program, the GECOPLAST project, in which both speakers participate, aims to assess the ecotoxicity and genotoxicity of microplastics and their additives in marine larvae.
