María Oliviero and Simona Schiavo, researchers from the ENEA Portici Research Centre in Naples, gave a conference this Tuesday as part of the Café don Sal series at Ecimat, in which they addressed the toxic effects of microplastics in the marine environment. Oliviero and Schiavo focused their intervention on the ecotoxic and genotoxic effects of plastic and its additives on marine planktonic larvae and how this impact could affect higher trophic levels. In this context and under the Assemble Plus programme, the Gecoplast project (Genotoxicity and Ecotoxicity of Plastics and Additives on marine larvae), in which both speakers participate, aims to evaluate the ecotoxicity and genotoxicity of microplastics and their additives in marine larvae. Gecoplast is being developed at ECIMAT through the Assemble Plus programme, and is supervised by Ricardo Beiras, a professor and researcher in the Ecotox group (CIM-UVigo).
The next report will be given by Marcos Rubal, researcher at the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR, Porto), who will present the paper “Mussel beds. Much more than seafood” on April 23.
