On Tuesday, April 23, Marcos Rubal, PhD from the University of Santiago de Compostela and researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR, Portugal), presented the talk “Mussel beds. Much more than seafood”, in which he described the use of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as an indicator of the effects of human activity on rocky coasts.
The lecture is part of the project “ECOS-New tools to evaluate the ecological status of rocky shores and its relationship with ecosystem services”, funded by FEDER funds and the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, which has as its main objective the assessment of the effects of human activity on rocky coasts using the mussel as a model organism, as well as other tools that define the ecological status of these habitats.
During his talk, Marcos presented the ECOS project, focusing on the three tasks he is currently working on: 1) the effect of urbanization on mussel populations and their associated fauna; 2) the effect of sediment accumulation on the biodiversity associated with mussels; and 3) the consequences of the ecological status of rocky coasts on the services provided by this ecosystem.
