“MARatón”: Marine Research Outreach Competition

The Marine Genetic Resources Laboratory and the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo are organizing the first marine outreach competition “MARathon: marine research explained in 8 minutes”, in which researchers and students will present short talks about their work to a public audience in a bar in Vigo.

This initiative, funded by “Somos Científicos, sácame de aquí”, was created with the aim of promoting the need and ability of researchers to communicate scientific work to a non-expert audience and to bring marine research conducted at the University of Vigo closer to the public in a relaxed, easy, and fun way.

Participants will need to capture the audience’s attention in very little time, as they will have only 8 minutes to present their work and its applications to a general audience. Since it will be the audience who votes for the best communicator, participants’ ability to summarize clearly and their skill in conveying the implications of their work for everyday life will be evaluated.

The event will be held on May 7 and 8, 2019, from20 to 22 h at Tinta Negra Bar (Rúa Irmandiños, 2, Vigo) and will feature prizes (first prize and surprises for the other participants) as well as participation certificates.

Once the participant registration process has closed, the full program is now available:
