In commemoration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Initiative “11 de Febrero”, staff from the Future Oceans Lab (FOL) research group attended the CEIP Santa María do Castro to talk about their research work on the adaptation of fishing to climate change. The researchers who participated in the activity, led by Elena Ojea, the first Galician woman to obtain an ERC-Starting grant, were truly grateful for the welcome, because as Julia Ameneiro points out, “The visit was a great opportunity to spread scientific knowledge about adaptation to climate change to an enthusiastic, motivated and spontaneous audience: children aged 3 to 12 with a high environmental interest”.
After a brief presentation to introduce the concepts of climate change, its impacts and some examples of adaptation, in addition to talking about the evidence of spatial changes in marine species, the children learned about the redistribution of fish in the ocean by playing a game designed by the researchers. During the activity, they had to think about how fish and fishermen would behave considering the impacts of climate change by moving different pieces of fish and boats on a large world map. Finally, they discussed the socio-economic impacts of such changes.
