The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, through the General Secretariat of Fisheries, is organizing the Presentation Days of the INTERMARES fisheries training and cooperation vessel between November 5 and 9. During these days, a series of meetings, conferences, courses, round tables and advice on fishing activity and marine research will be held, paying special attention to cooperation for the development of the sector and technical training on ships.
The Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo (CIM-UVIGO) participates in these Conferences with the presentation of three conferences:
- “Marine Research in Antarctica”, Mariano Lastra and Jesús Souza Troncoso, November 5 at 12:00 p.m.
- “Impact of climate change on fisheries and adaptive measures of marine socio-ecological systems”, Diego Salgueiro, November 5 at 1:00 p.m.
- “Cryopreservation: freezing marine organisms in time”, Estefanía Paredes, November 6 at 11:00am.
During the first conference, CIM-UVIGO researchers, Mariano Lastra and Jesús S. Troncoso (Coastal Ecology group), will present two projects developed in Antarctica. In the first part of the conference, the researchers will show some collection techniques used to study Antarctic marine benthos, the problems associated with said techniques and the results achieved in the last project developed. In the second part, Lastra and Troncoso will present the possible implications of nutrient remineralization derived from algae degradation in an Antarctic ecosystem in a climate change scenario. Following the previous one, Diego Salgueiro, researcher at the Future Oceans Lab, will deal in a transdisciplinary way with the identification and assessment of impacts, the investigation of the states of socio-ecological vulnerability of these impacts and the consequent socio-ecological adaptation, focusing the presentation especially on fishing systems. Finally, Estefanía Paredes, head of the Functional Preservation Service of Marine Biological Resources at ECIMAT, will present the methodology used for the cryopreservation of mollusks, some of the results achieved so far and the innovative lines of work that are being implemented in this service, a pioneer in the cryopreservation of clam and mussel larvae.
The ship will be docked at the transatlantic dock at the Port of Vigo. After the conferences and depending on the number of attendees, there will be a free guided tour of the ship.
To attend the conferences you must arrive 10 minutes early and register at the entrance to the ship. The day on November 5th requires prior registration, and it is necessary to send an email with your name and ID to carrerasazules@apvigo.es and bluegrowthvigo@apvigo.es.
