On Thursday, September 27, Alberto Gutiérrez, a doctoral student at the University of Vigo, presented part of the results of his doctoral thesis within the “Café con Sal” program with the talk “Response of bacterioplankton to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment in a dynamic coastal system: Ría de Vigo”.
Alberto Gutiérrez’s doctoral thesis, supervised by Emilio Fernández and Eva Teira (Biological Oceanography Group, University of Vigo) and titled “Effect of increasing nutrient inputs on the community structure of prokaryotic plankton using sequencing techniques” aims to identify the prokaryotic plankton taxa that respond to nutrient variations supplied by rivers and atmospheric deposition, describe their responses in different seasons, and develop a predictive model to forecast how the prokaryotic community structure will change in response to future increases in coastal nutrient inputs.
